Containment for refits & respray

Paint won’t cure in the wind, sanding dust won’t stay on your boat, and the yard won’t thank you for overspray on the neighbours. A shrink wrap enclosure gives the job a sealed, sheltered space — a temporary spray booth built where the boat already is.

What is refit containment?

Refit containment is a temporary enclosure built around a boat — or part of it — so sanding, filling, spraying or blasting can happen inside a sealed space. On a hard standing it works as a temporary spray booth: dust and overspray stay in, wind and weather stay out, and the yard around it stays clean.

How people find us

What yards and painters search for

“Temporary spray booth for a boat”

An enclosure around the hull on the hard, with headroom for staging, a door for materials, and fire-retardant film for spraying.

“Stop sanding dust going on other boats”

A sealed skin around the job keeps dust and grit where it’s made — the quickest way to keep the yard’s other customers happy.

“Antifouling in bad weather”

Containment down to the ground takes the wind out of it, so the work runs to programme instead of to the forecast.

The process

How an enclosure is built

  1. Plan with the contractor

Height, staging, door positions, extraction and lighting are agreed with whoever is doing the work.

  2. Frame or scaffold

A freestanding frame, or the yard’s scaffold, defines the working space around the hull.

  3. Seal to ground

Fire-retardant film is welded into one skin and sealed down to the ground so nothing escapes at the base.

  4. Strike and clear

When the job is done the enclosure comes down in one session and the film is taken away.

Options

Types of containment

Full hull enclosure

For full resprays, osmosis work and antifouling — the whole boat inside, sealed to ground.

Section enclosure

Around a transom, a deck repair or a coachroof, so a spot repair doesn’t dust the whole boat.

Blasting containment

Heavier specification for grit and media blasting, with the base sealed and access controlled.

Protection of finished areas

Covers over areas already finished while work continues nearby.

Before we quote

We scan it first. Then the price doesn't move.

For containment we survey with the yard and the contractor, so the enclosure suits the work inside it. We measure the vessel, work out the frame, the film area, the vents and the doors — and the number you get back is the number you pay. No provisional sums, no “subject to access”.

Full respray on an 18 m next month. Yard shed’s booked solid. Can you build us a booth on the hard?
Yes — enclosure to ground, fire-retardant film, extraction points and a door for materials. We’ll design it with your painter this week.
Great, let’s do it.

Send a photo. Get a straight answer.

Not every containment job needs a visit to get going. Send a couple of photos and tell us the boat, the yard, and whether it’s sanding, spraying or blasting, and an installer will tell you what’s involved — including when shrink wrap isn’t the right call.

  1. Photograph it

Whole item in frame, plus one close-up of the access side.

  2. Send it over

WhatsApp or email, with the boat, the yard, and whether it’s sanding, spraying or blasting.

  3. We come back to you

Approach, timescale and a price, in plain English.

Finished covers

What a proper cover looks like.

Tight, smooth, framed clear of what it protects and welded into one skin. This is the standard every cover is fitted to.

Questions

Refit & yard containment: common questions

Can you build a temporary spray booth around a boat?

Yes. A shrink wrap enclosure around the boat on the hard works as a temporary spray booth: sealed, sheltered and lit by daylight through the film.

Is the film fire-retardant?

For spraying and hot work we use fire-retardant film, and confirm the grade in writing with the quote.

Who books containment — the yard or the owner?

Usually the yard or the refit contractor, sometimes the owner. Either is fine as long as the yard agrees to the enclosure on its hard standing.

Can you contain just one section?

Yes. Section enclosures around a transom, deck repair or coachroof keep a spot repair from dusting the whole boat.

How quickly can an enclosure come down?

Normally in one session. The film is cut away, bagged and taken with us, and the yard gets its space back straight away.
