Grand Harbour

Superyacht covers at Grand Harbour Marina

Grand Harbour Marina takes yachts well over 100 metres, and many of them winter here. We fit covers for the parts that suffer most while a superyacht sits — decks, tenders, toys and exterior furniture — and full containment when she’s in for work.

Wintering a superyacht in Birgu: what needs protecting?

Grand Harbour Marina sits in Dockyard Creek, between Birgu and Senglea, below Fort St Angelo. It’s Malta’s superyacht marina — run by Camper & Nicholsons, with berths for yachts well beyond 100 metres and a superyacht shipyard in the next creek. Larger yachts increasingly use it as a winter base between October and March, which is exactly when the protection question comes up.

A superyacht in winter berth isn’t sitting idle — the crew is aboard, maintenance is happening, contractors come and go. Wrapping the whole yacht rarely makes sense. What does is protecting the expensive, exposed parts while the work goes on around them: teak decks, exterior upholstery and helm stations, the tender and toys in the garage or on deck, and sections of paintwork that are being worked on next to areas that aren’t.

The usual problems

What captains and managers usually ask for here

“Protect the decks while the contractors are aboard”

Covers over teak, furniture and helm stations that keep dust, drips and foot traffic off them, with walk-ways and doors left where the crew needs them.

“The tender is going to sit for the whole winter”

Tenders, jet skis and toys can be wrapped individually — on deck, on the quay or on the trailer — so they come back into service clean.

“We’re going into the yard for paint”

Containment enclosures for sanding, filling and spraying, built around the section being worked on, with fire-retardant film where the yard requires it.

The approach

Working on a superyacht berth

Superyacht work runs through the captain and the management company, and through the marina’s own security. Grand Harbour Marina is aligned to ISPS security guidelines, so access is arranged in advance and every crew member is named. We work to the yacht’s own schedule — around guests, crew changes and other contractors — rather than asking it to fit around ours.

For part covers, we measure and frame each area separately so each one can be removed on its own. That means the sun deck can come off for a weekend charter while the bow and tender stay covered. For yard periods, we design the enclosure with the refit contractor so it suits their access, extraction and lighting.

  • Briefed through captain or manager
  • Access arranged with marina security
  • Part covers removable independently
  • Tenders and toys wrapped separately
  • Refit enclosures designed with the yard
  • Fire-retardant film where required

Before we quote

We scan it first. Then the price doesn't move.

At Grand Harbour Marina we survey aboard with the captain or engineer, cleared through marina security. We measure the vessel, work out the frame, the film area, the vents and the doors — and the number you get back is the number you pay. No provisional sums, no “subject to access”.

Questions from Birgu

Shrink wrap in Birgu: common questions

Can you shrink wrap a superyacht at Grand Harbour Marina?

Yes — in full or in part. Most winter-berthed superyachts need part covers for decks, furniture, tenders and toys rather than a full wrap, and we can do either.

How do you handle marina security?

We arrange access in advance through the yacht and the marina office, with every crew member named. We work to the marina’s rules on hours and hot works.

Can a covered area be opened for a charter or a viewing?

Yes. Each area is framed and wrapped separately, so one section can come off and the rest stay on. Doors can be built in where the crew needs regular access.

Do you build containment for yard periods?

Yes. We design enclosures with the shipyard or refit contractor for sanding, filling and spraying, and use fire-retardant film where the yard requires it.
