Yard containment in Marsa

Marsa is where Malta’s boatyards get their hands dirty — haul-outs, antifouling, sanding, spraying. A sealed shrink wrap enclosure keeps the dust and overspray in, the weather out, and lets the work carry on whatever the forecast.

Sanding or spraying a boat in Marsa? Where is all that dust going?

At the inner end of Grand Harbour, Marsa has a string of boatyards that handle haul-outs, hard standing and repair work, alongside the industrial estate and the dry-storage operators that keep small boats on racks. It’s where a lot of Malta’s antifouling, osmosis treatment and paint work actually happens, and where boats from all over the island come to be worked on.

Sanding a hull or spraying a topcoat in the open in Marsa means dust and overspray on every boat downwind, and a paint job at the mercy of the wind, the Saharan dust and the occasional winter downpour. A shrink wrap enclosure built around the boat on the hard gives the painter a clean, sheltered space and gives the yard a dust-tight box — which keeps the neighbours’ boats, and the yard’s other customers, happy.

The usual problems

What Marsa yards and contractors usually ask for

“We need to spray, but the wind won’t drop”

A sealed enclosure takes the wind out of the equation. The painter works inside, the overspray stays inside, and the job runs to programme.

“Our sanding dust is landing on customers’ boats”

Containment around the boat being worked on keeps dust and grit where it belongs — and keeps the other customers off the phone.

“There’s plant on the yard that sits out all winter”

Machinery, generators and equipment can be wrapped against salt, dust and rain. See our other services.

The approach

Enclosures built for the trade inside them

A containment enclosure is a working space, not just a cover. We design it with the contractor: how high it needs to be for the staging, where the door goes for materials and people, where extraction runs out, and how much light the painter needs. White film gives good daylight inside; clear panels can be added.

For spraying and hot work, fire-retardant film is the norm, and we confirm the grade in writing with the quote. When the job is finished the enclosure comes down in one session and the film is taken away, so the yard gets its space back straight away.

  • Daylight through white film
  • Down in one session when done

Before we quote

We scan it first. Then the price doesn't move.

In the Marsa yards we survey with the contractor, so the enclosure suits the work inside it. We measure the vessel, work out the frame, the film area, the vents and the doors — and the number you get back is the number you pay. No provisional sums, no “subject to access”.

Finished covers

What a proper cover looks like.

Questions from Marsa

Shrink wrap in Marsa: common questions

Can you build a spray booth around a boat on the hard in Marsa?

Yes. A shrink wrap enclosure around the boat works as a temporary spray booth — sealed, sheltered and lit by daylight through the film. Fire-retardant film is used for spraying.

Do yards or owners book you?

Either. Most containment work comes through the yard or the refit contractor, but owners can book us directly as long as the yard agrees.

Can you wrap boats in dry storage?

Yes. Small boats and RIBs on racks or trailers can be wrapped to keep dust and bird mess off them between launches.

Do you cover industrial plant in Marsa as well?

Yes. Plant, machinery and equipment that has to sit outside can be wrapped against salt, dust and rain. It’s part of our other services.
